Hey everyone! This year my high school is hosting Relay for Life, an American Cancer Society event. If you’ve never heard of it, Relay for Life is an overnight event where teams camp out along a track and at least one team member is continuously walking to show that cancer never sleeps.

The biggest reason that I am taking part in this incredible event is my grandfather (check out the picture for a little throwback lovin’ with my favorite man). My pops lost his battle to lung cancer in 2009 and, as most people who have lost a loved one would, I would do anything to have a chance to thank him for making such a huge impact in my life. His last days were spent suffering, as were ours, while he was dying in a way that no one should have to endure. Cancer doesn’t just affect the patient. It affects each and every person who loves and surrounds him. I watched my grandma, my mom, and my uncle grow more silent with each passing day. Five years later, the hole in our hearts still isn’t fixed. Mine never will be. I was twelve when I lost my grandpa to lung cancer- something that no one, let alone a twelve year old, should never have to cope with.

The work that the American Cancer Society continues to do decreases the chances of someone like me losing her grandpa in the future. Each and every day, they give cancer patients moral and medical support.

If you would like to donate to my team, please click here: http://tinyurl.com/nicolesrelayforlife. Every donation will not only bring me closer to my personal goal, but it will bring researchers closer to finding a cure for a disease that has affected millions of people. Thank you!
